Review of the novel And Before Me, a Whole Life. Eliška Bartek
In her autofictional novel “And before me a whole life”, artist Eliška Bartek tells the story of a young woman's cross-border search for happiness in times of patriarchy and finds her very own sound in the process.

THE LAST BOHEMIAN.
ELIŠKA BARTEK'S SURREAL JOURNEY THROUGH SPACE AND TIME
From April 12th to July 6th, 2024, the Max Wandeler Foundation in Luzern will showcase a selection of photograms and clichés from the artist Eliška Bartek, alongside excerpts from her collection of photographs from the Czech Avant-garde, featuring works by František Drtikol, Jaromir Funke, Miloš Korecek, Vilém Reichmann, Jaroslav Rössler, and Miroslav Tichy.
Curated by Marco Obrist and carefully tailored to fit the historical spaces of the Max Wandeler Foundation in Luzern, the exhibition, along with its accompanying publication, intertwines different generations and perspectives. It juxtaposes Eliška Bartek's photograms with carefully selected historical works, offering a captivating narrative that transcends time and space.
"And Before Me, a Whole Life" tells the terrible and deeply moving, yet also somewhat comical life story of a girl from a good and influential family who decides to leave her homeland of Czechoslovakia after the Russian invasion of Prague. Using an advertisement – "Beautiful Czech Woman Seeks Husband" – she initiates her escape from the country and embarks on an odyssey through various, more or less taxing, yet always passionate love and marriage situations in Germany and Switzerland, until she finally arrives as a person and an artist, at peace within herself, in her entire life. "
A completely unadapted voice. A new tone, rough and daring, yet also tender and full of profound Eastern European humor. A book that tends towards drastic measures and ruthlessly explores boundaries. And a woman who crosses these boundaries." (Daniel Kehlmann)
